The aim of this competition is to foster a culture of sustainability among students in middle school and high school (grades 6 to 12) by engaging them in the annual sustainability competition 'Schoolathon On Sustainability'. This will empower them to promote value-centric and holistic education and contribute to building a humanistic global society.

Who can participate?

Young students can register themselves for Schoolathon On Sustainability Competition under two categories:

Bharat Soka Gakkai

Bharat Soka Gakkai (BSG) is an organization dedicated to promoting the values of happiness and peace for all. The word ‘Soka’ in Soka Gakkai means ‘Value Creation’ and ‘Gakkai’ means ‘Organization’.

BSG organizes various activities under the umbrella of peace, culture, education, and sustainability with a focus on ‘empowering individuals’ and to create a ‘New Age in India’ where the dignity of all life is respected.

With its headquarters in New Delhi, BSG has more than 270,000 voluntary members who are spread across 600 towns and cities of India and belong to all age groups. More than 135,000 members of BSG are youth, with an average age of 27 years. More than 6,000 members of BSG are educators.

To build a sustainable age by 2030, BSG launched the ‘BSG for SDG’ initiative in 2021, with the motto: ‘Towards 2030: Achieving SDGs through Sustainable Human Behaviour.’ This initiative is in sync with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which focus on leaving no one behind.

Under the ‘BSG for SDG’ initiative, BSG is focusing on spreading greater awareness on the 17 SDGs and encouraging others to take urgent action on the SDGs. Towards this, BSG has launched an exclusive ‘BSG for SDG’ mobile application and website that serves as a one-stop-platform where people can learn about the concept of sustainability in an easy-to-read and easy-to-understand manner, connect with like-minded individuals who are taking inspiring contributions to the SDGs, and upload their personal actions showcasing how they are leading sustainable lives.

The Schoolathon On Sustainability main event will be held on 7th October 2023 at a venue in Delhi NCR.
You can register yourself and your team members on the official SOS website. Click here to go to the registration page.
The registrations are open till 30th July 2023.
Individual registration is not allowed. Only team registrations are allowed. Teams can be made with a minimum of 2 members and a maximum of 4 members. Please go through the registration process in detail on this page to understand the entire process.
Any one of the team members who are making up a team can do the registration on behalf of all other team members. Registrations done by any other person outside of the team will not be accepted.
Yes, inter-school teams as well as intra-school teams can be made.
One student should be a part of one team only. Students whose details appear in two different teams will have to pick one team and drop their name from the other team.
No, any teachers, faculty, or other staff or individuals cannot be part of the team. Only students studying in grades 6 to 8 and students studying in grades 9 to 12 can be part of the team, as per the categories mentioned on the website. Please go through the registration process in detail on this page to understand the entire process in detail.
No, there are two different categories for 6th to 8th grade and 9th to 12th grade. Students belonging to one category cannot register for another category.
There are four categories in total in the Schoolathon. For complete details on all four categories, please go through the registration process in detail on this page.
The ‘People’ categories focus on SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 16. The ‘Planet’ categories focus on SDGs 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17.
Based on the idea that your team wants to submit, please identify which SDGs are covered by your idea. Your idea should encompass at least 1 of the 17 SDGs, if not more. Each of the 17 SDGs has been divided into 2 categories for the purpose of this competition – People and Planet. Accordingly, you can identify the category under which you should make your registration, depending on which SDGs are covered by your idea. It is not mandatory to submit supporting documents, but it is encouraged to attach any files—whether MS Office files or any media files—to elaborate upon the idea your team is presenting.
Yes, there is a word limit of 500 words for submitting your project-idea.
The core focus of this competition is to create a platform for young students to develop youth partnerships, use their inherent creativity to come up with innovative solutions for achieving the SDGs, and most importantly, find solutions that can help bring about behavioural change amongst individuals in society, which can help everyone lead sustainable lives.
Yes, there is a registration fee of INR 1,000 per team.
At the time of registering your team, once you have completely filled out your registration form, you can click on the "Submit" button. Once you have clicked on the SUBMIT button, you will be redirected to the payment gateway, where you can make an online payment to complete the registration process. Your form will be considered accepted only once the registration fee has been paid. Payment can be made through the payment gateway, either through a debit card, through UPI, or through net banking. Credit card payments are not allowed.
Once you submit the registration form and have paid the registration fee, a window will open on your screen stating “Thank you. Your registration has been successfully completed. A confirmation email has been sent to all team members on the given email addresses.” You can also check your mailbox for the confirmation email.
The shortlisted teams for round two will be announced by 19th August 2023 via email, along with all other details related to round two.
There will be the top three winning teams in each of the four categories, making a total of twelve winning teams for the entire SOS. Each of these 12 winning teams will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000. Please note: the cash prize will be given to the entire team and not to an individual member of the team.
